A thinking process to get you writing a good blog post when you have absolutely nothing in mind
If you have been blogging consistently for at least two months, you must have experienced this before. After a busy day in business or at work, you barely have the time to think of what you want to put up on your blog to keep your readers entertained for the day, but nevertheless, you fire up your Internet browser, and load your blog administration panel.
Then there it is. A moment of silence, a moment of totally blankness.
You have nothing interesting to write about. You read your feeds and you find that everybody is echoing the same old news you are so sick of it! You check out your newspaper and again its the same old boring news, or all the headlines don’t concern you at all.
What do you do?
How do you get beyond this?
It all began with toastmasters
When I was a toastmaster (that was a couple of years ago!) one of the things they had was a section on “Table Topics”, where they called for volunteers to speak impromptu for three minutes. You would be given a topic, but speaking for three minutes IS a challenge for many!
There was one process they thought, abbreviated with PREP.
Here’s how.
P - Point
Select something you want to talk about. Just go ahead and pick a word related about your blog. So, let’s say, mine is “blog marketing”. Think of something that you want to make a point about. For example, “Blog marketing is useful not only for big corporations but also small businesses.”
So, now you have your point!
R - Reason
After you are done with the point, you can go ahead and talk about why you take that stand! So, I would go:
“The reason why I say this is because the Internet is a place where you can manage perceptions. When you have a blog, people don’t know whether you are a big company or a one man operation, and what is frequently perceived is that when you have a bigger website, your company is also bigger.”
Blah blah blah… I can go on and on.
E - Example
Substantiate your point with an example. Show evidence that you are talking about occurances you have observed, not just random thoughts.
“One great example is XYZ company, even though it is essentially a home operation with just a two man team, it is able to reach out to the world because of their blog, and with a professionally designed template, no one really knows they are working in their own garage!”
P - Point
Finally, conclude with your point again to put the message across. This is also the time you can put a call to action.
“So, we’ve seen how the use of blogging in business, and how even small companies can leverage on technology. Blog marketing is useful not only for big corporations but also small businesses. Have you started your small business blog yet? If not, get started with my blog marketing e-course here!”
Done.
