The blogosphere is a global chatroom

BlogosphereHave you ever thought – what is so great about the blogosphere? Why isn’t there the “website-osphere” when people were starting to build personal websites, or “IM-opshere” or “IRC-osphere” when these things were hot?

Why blogosphere?

It all boils down to feelings, human relations, and how amazing it is to be able to connect with people across the web.

Lets say you visit a corporate website, or a personal homepage of someone. Yeah, there may be a few interesting articles to read, and maybe some funny thoughts… but the thing is, when you revisit the page again a week later, you find that the articles are stagnant, the jokes become old, even the pictures start to become familiar.

Compare this feeling to the feeling when you visit a blog (especially the frequently updated ones like the ones in my daily reads!), its amazing! Every single day, you check back and you find something new to read! You will literally start to feel an emotional attachment with those blogs you read everyday! I mean, I’d be terribly upset if the authors of all my daily reads decide to stop blogging for a month! I’d be bored! You guys feed me great information!

I just reported in my previous post that Technorati is keeping track of approximately 57 million blogs to date! Do you realise how amazing that is? Its so different from Google keeping track of a millions of websites! Why? Because you know that there is at least one human being sitting behind every blog!

Technorati is not only a collection of 57 million blogs – its a collection of 57 million lives! Lives of professionals, students, teachers, lawyers, right about every corner of the world where there is Internet access.

Isn’t that just so amazing?

Internet Relay Chats (IRCs) were a big hit, I must admit, but I think the thing about IRC is that it requires real time chatting… and well, you know, we all live in different parts of the globe and its sometimes inconvenient to be chatting at 4am in the morning to get in touch with the people from the other end of the globe.

But what about instant messaging? IM is also a big hit, with messengers like ICQ, Live, Skype, Yahoo messenger and the likes. Again, there is something about IM that your contact list is only for people you already know (at least for me!). How does it feel when you receive a message from someone you don’t know? Compare this to an anonymous comment on your blog! The feeling is just so different.

So in an essence, websites are too “dead”, IRCs are too “alive”, IMs are too “closed”, and the blogosphere bridges all of these. The blogosphere rules! You have updated information, with a choice for real time communication (either though frantically pressing the ‘F5’ key waiting for replies on your comments, or though a tagboard), and its open to anybody in the whole wide world!

Wow!

Let’s celebrate, because we are all in this giant massive chatroom, connecting us from anywhere of the world, allowing us to “chat” at our own preferred timings! This chatroom is called the blogosphere!

… and of course, because the holiday season is coming!
