How to be the World Top 500 websites on Alexa
I can’t believe it. I just searched the Alexa World Top 500 sites, and I found that Google.com.sg is the ONLY .sg domain in the top 500! It is ranked 208 today.
I was actually observing what makes a site top 500… the answer?
Provide something useful (a service, a product, or information) for free
Examples. StockXchng was listed on 499/500 today. It provides free stock photographs! Skype is 304 because the basic services for Skype is free! I use both of these EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Needless to say, services like YouTube, Google, Feedburner, CafePress, SedoParking… are all on the top 500 - and they all let you do something for free.
DPreview is a Digital Photography Review site. It provides information for free.
I’ve learnt something from World Success Coach Anthony Robbins. If you want to learn, model after the experts, model after the best. Learn from the best! So… if you want to get your website rankings up, go analyze the Alexa Top 500, pick one, and do exactly what they do (except maybe in a different topic).
People come online to search for free things, they don’t expect to pay a single cent (at least, for me!) So, the way to market on the Internet is to provide free services/products/information, and then follow up by selling upgrades, or complementary products.
On this note, I’m working on my freebie thing right away!

Indeed, to be in the top 500 will mean ultimate success to many website owners. As for me, to be among the top 100,000 websites will be great success.
I believe the busiest Singapore-based website would be zaobao.com, it is ranked 339 in Alexa. 85% of the readers are from mainland China.
Yes, useful and entertaining information draw traffic. And you need many millions of unique visitors a day to be ranked in top 500.

Interesting post. You certainly have set your sights high. I too will be satisfied with just having an Alexa ranking in the top 100,000. I’m sure that I will accomplish that goal, as my Alexa ranking on Internet Security 101 is steadily increasing. Best of luck with your future endeavors.
