During the first phase of the SEO design workshop last Saturday, it was mentioned that people are searching for “long tails” nowadays.
I read about the long tail phenomenon in the blog marketing book a while ago, and basically it is about the trend of people searching for niche items, rather than general items. For example, when you get to a search box, you tend to search for “Where to do I get a red Ferrari” instead of “Car”. People know what they want, when they search for things!

The idea of this Long Tail came about from this book: The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More…. and I just got my copy from my local bookstore today!
So then, how do you act on this phenomenon on your blogs? I came across this site on building a better blog and it says:
here’s how to capture the strength of Long Tail marketing. Forget trying to score big numbers. Focus on your niche. Write articles and blog posts using all the different versions of keywords that your potential clients use in the search engines.
The Long Tail theory in effect says it is better to tailor your marketing to specific niches and audiences, rather than trying to be big and be all things to all people. There are more numbers of potential sales out there in ‘the skinny long tail’ of the statistics.
Remember, being niche rules! You can either fight with the other millions of websites under the word “Coffee” and get listed on the 479th page, or target your website for “Mediterranean Gourmet Coffee” and be the top ranking page!
